This travel blogger interview features Claudia Scheffler-Perrone of Nonsoloamore. A lady with very bad luck with hostel stays in New York.
What is your name?
Which country do you come from/call home?
I’m Italian but I was born in Germany. Now I’m living again in Germany (after living in different countries). Hamburg to be exact.
Are you a backpacker/long term traveller/business traveller/live and work abroad?
I used to live in different countries but right now I’m just starting again traveling. Not for long periods, just to see and experience new places.
How do you fund your travel (savings/work whilst travelling/other)?
I have my blog but I work as a Journalist. I also have a small agency (killer-press.com) where I do PR for some clients (specialized in Social Media and online PR).
What is the first trip you remember taking and how old were you?
As my parents always traveled I think my first trip was very, very young. Probably the first trip I remember was to Italy (Naples) and I was 6.
Have you been anywhere which turned out to be totally different to how you imagined? If so, how?
I think L.A. was different than I thought. I was 22 (I think) and I knew L.A. form the TV Show 90210 Beverly Hills and some other shows. I never thought that everything was so far away from each other. You have Venice Beach at one location, then you have Melrose Avenue (that disappointed me), then Beverly Hills and so on. I was used to walk by feet (like in Europe) but this was not possible in L.A. You needed a car to move around.
Have you had any bad experiences whilst traveling?
No, not really. I just remember a hostel I stayed in New York. It seemed so clean and everything but during the nights the cockroaches came out. That was so disgusting.
Do you have any funny travel stories?
I was in the Dominican Republic and we took a normal bus to go to the other side of the island. We had to change a few times the line. When we took one of the busses back the driver asked us, where we were going. We said that we will have to take few lines to get back to the hotel. He then turned around and screamed to the people in the bus (local people) if they were ok if they bring us (with all the people inside) to the hotel. Everybody was fine with it. So the public bus brought us directly to the door of our hotel. That was so funny and awesome.
Which is the worst place you’ve been to and why?
I think the worst place I’ve been was in New York too. This was another hostel in Manhattan and I stayed there just one night. They did not have cockroaches, they had rats. That was a very bad experience and I left that place early in the morning. I stayed up all night. Btw I really (still) love New York.
Avoid bad hostel experiences by reading online reviews and ratings first with HostelWorld.
Where is your favorite place in the world?
I can not really name one place because I have a few places I absolutely love. But I can say this. I will never forget, sitting of the terrace of a beautiful beach house in North Carolina and watching the dolphins play. There was nothing besides a long, long beach and the sea. That was awesome and I really thought about not leaving and staying there forever.
Do you have a bucket list? If so what is on it?
Oh yes I have a bucket list. I have so many places that I like to see. There are many parts of America that I didn’t see and I’d love to. And I’ve never been to Thailand or Singapore. And so on. Long list.
Can you imagine life without travel?
Never ever!! I couldn’t live without traveling. I would be depressive if I wouldn’t have the chance to travel.
What is the name of your travel blog and the url?
The name is nonsoloamore. It is Italian and means – not only love. I wanted to say that you could show your love in different ways. Not the simple – I „love“ that.
When did you begin your website Nonsoloamore?
My blog started in 2013. I traveled through South Carolina and everybody asked me to send pictures. I thought it is much easier to blog and all my friends and family could take a look at the site.
Why do you write (for money/connecting with people/therapeutic/fun)?
I write because I love writing. I always did and I probably always will. When I was younger I used to write stories and I also won some awards. I don’t have the time anymore for that but maybe one day. Writing is my passion, my love.
Why do you have your blog?
Because I want to show people that everything is possible if you only want. There are so many great places in the world. It is not only about destinations. It is also about transmitting the emotions that comes with that. There are so many possibilities to enjoy life and you don’t have to be rich to do that. You really can escape from your routine if you are willing to do that.
What makes your site so unique and why should people read it?
I am real. I have a family, I’m a business owner and a modern women. I love design, fashion, lifestyle and the sea. I can combine everything and I think that most of the people can do that too (if they want). Maybe some people are scared to leave their paths but sometimes you have to risk to change your life. I really live like that. I’m not just telling stuff. I’m not 20 anymore and I know what I want and what I don’t. Someone said to me that my blog is unique – because of me. It is always difficult to say why you are so unique.
I like to quote some of my readers. They say:
„Because your blog is inspiring.“
„It transmits good vibes (even to the other side of the globe).“
„It is fresh and modern and makes me happy reading it.“
„I can feel your passion in every word your write.“
„For the great (insider) tips.“
Do you have any products or services to offer?
I offer public relations services and my articles for magazines.
What has been your most successful blog post to date and what was it about?
My most successful blog post was „how to work with bloggers“. It had an incredible response.
What has been your favourite article to write either for your blog or another publication?
I like doing interviews with people I meet. It is always nice how they react and you laugh and have fun. But I also like trying new things.
What is your favourite mode of transport? (plane/train/boat/car)
I like the plane (overseas), but I like moving by car in Europe. It is nice and you get to see so much of the countries you wouldn’t have by plane or train.
What inspires you?
For sure traveling. People also inspire me – a lot. But I think that sitting at the beach inspires me most. I can’t really say why but when I sit there and I hear the ocean. I smell the scent of the salt – I get inspired. I’m happy. That is crazy but the best stories emerge from there.
What has travel taught you?
I think traveling opens your mind. Wherever you go and whatever you see. You have to be open minded to connect with people. It also showed me that I have to surpass sometimes myself. I can do things that I never thought I would have been able too.
