What is your name?

Heather Rader

Which country do you come from/call home?

United States

Are you a backpacker/long term traveller/business traveller/live and work abroad?

Leisure traveler, I try take one long weekend trip a month and several long trips per year.

How do you fund your travel (savings/work whilst travelling/other)?

I save for every trip through my full-time job and freelance writing. I also do a small amount of “travel-hacking” through two credit cards which allows me to often stay for free in IHG Hotels and use American Airline Miles to travel domestically and internationally.

What is the first trip you remember taking and how old were you?

My first trip I remember taking was to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina when I was 6 years old.

Have you been anywhere which turned out to be totally different to how you imagined? If so, how?

India encompasses so many feelings for me and can be a sensory overload for those who visit, including myself! Despite the chaos of the crowded cities, I felt very calm and spiritual in India. India is an incredible place that will have you wondering why you visited (with the heat, crowds, poverty, etc.), then you turn a corner and it reminds you of the beauty of its people, the land and spiritual connections.

Have you had any bad experiences whilst travelling?

Thankfully, no!

Do you have any funny travel stories?

During my first international trip to Ireland when I was 18, several people at a pub in Dublin mistook me for Britney Spears! Even after assuring them I was not the famous pop singer, the rest of the night I had people asking to snap a photo with me! I think the amount of alcohol consumed by my fellow pub-goers must have clouded their judgment, because I look nothing like Britney Spears!

Which is the worst place you’ve been to and why?

I always find something to love about every place I visit, so I can’t recall any major bad experiences that altered my trips. Sometimes the weather doesn’t cooperate and it can put a damper on your travels, like when I climbed the Great Wall in China in July 2010 when it was 110°F!

Where is your favourite place in the world?

Well, there truly is no place like home. So I would say Ohio because my husband, pets, family and friends are in Ohio. But I feel that London, England is my second home. Every time I visit London, I fall more in love with the city!

Do you have a bucket list? If so what is on it?

Yes, I have a bucket list! It is a mile long, I have so many things I want to see in this world! Every time I cross something off my list I tend to add 5 more places to it! I would like to visit all 50 states in the U.S. (currently 36/50) and step foot on all 7 continents (currently 3/7)!

Can you imagine life without travel?

No! I feel like the best version of myself when I am traveling!

If you were not travelling what would you be doing instead?

Dreaming of travel!

What is the name of your travel blog and the url?

My blog is Ohio Girl Travels. www.ohiogirltravels.com

When did you begin your website Ohio Girl Travels?

June 2014

Why do you write (for money/connecting with people/therapeutic/fun)?

I have always had a passion for writing. I write to keep a collection of my travel memories so I can look back when I am older at the amazing experiences that I have had! I also write to inspire and to encourage others to seek adventures, whether big or small in their own city, state, country or around the world!

Thankfully my passion for writing, now earns me a little extra travel money through freelance writing work!

What makes your site so unique and why should people read it?

I’m just an average small town girl trying to see the world. Growing up in rural Ohio, raising pigs, I never thought I would have any opportunities to travel. But at the age of 18, my aunt took me to London, England and since then I can’t seem to live without travel. I want to encourage the average person to travel, whether around their hometown, state, the United States, or world, get out there to experience new things, cultures, foods and landscapes. With so much negativity in the world, I try to share a positive outlook and inspire others to take in all the beauty this world has to offer!

Do you have any products or services to offer?

I am currently accepting freelance writing jobs. Please email me at ohiogirltravels@gmail.com for inquires.

What has been your most successful blog post to date and what was it about?

My most successful blog post to date is “12 Reasons to Visit Haywood County, North Carolina”. After visiting coastal North Carolina for many years, I finally had an opportunity (through a sponsored media trip) to discover the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina. With the small town atmosphere, friendly locals, and gorgeous mountain scenery, I would encourage everyone to visit this region of the Smoky Mountains!

What has been your favourite article to write either for your blog or another publication?

My favorite article to write was “How a Solo Trip to Jordan Empowered Me”. After receiving so much negativity about traveling alone in the Middle East, I wanted to share how my solo trip to Jordan inspired and empowered me. I hope this post also inspired others to follow their dreams, even if with negative reactions from their friends and loved ones.

What is your favourite mode of transport? (plane/train/boat/car)

I love taking all modes of transportation, each mode of transport has unique aspects! Traveling by plane obviously gets you to your destination quicker. Train travel has always had a romantic connotation to me, maybe because I didn’t take my first train ride until I visited Europe! Anytime I visit a port city, I like to take advantage of their water taxi and taking a cruise is a relaxing way to travel. I have always loved road trips, the freedom to adjust your travel schedule and stop at attractions at your leisure is priceless!

Do you have any advice or tips for aspiring travellers?

Take the first step, it might be scary, but put one foot in front of the other and go explore. Start small to gain your confidence and then just go! Seek new things, visit new places, always be open to new experiences and fall in love with the world!

What has travel taught you?

Happiness. Self-confidence. Love. Be kind to everyone you meet. To smile at everyone and say hello, you never know where that small greeting might take you!

  1. I feel calm in India too!! I’m glad I’m not the only one! People think I’m crazy – but there’s something about being there that seems to be good for the soul… well, my soul at least!
